Spa visits are a luxury. The warm water, the aromatic scents, the therapeutic touch of massage. They take time, and cost a fortune, but are so worth it. However the majority of us are missing a similar opportunity that is readily available each morning as we shower. An opportunity hijacked by the people we allow to be in there with us.
We’re not talking physically here. We’re talking about thoughts, memories, and actions that overwhelm our attention and distract us from the present. For the most part, a lot of us are living life unaware of what we’re actually doing.
If your company already has a MeditationWorks mindfulness meditation program established, or you have an established meditation practice, you are building skills that will help you resist distraction and live a little more in the here and now.
It goes a little something like this:
Step into the shower. Catch yourself lost in some thought. Say to yourself, “Thanks, brain, for reminding me about that rude comment Chris made last night. But right now I choose to enjoy my shower.” Now: Feel your fingertips as you wash your hair.
Smell the soap and shampoo. Relax your arms and shoulders. Take a couple deep breaths while just enjoying the warm water.
These wonderful therapeutic benefits along with many others, are often lost as we rush through our daily activities. The small area of our brain that generates fear, rumination, and worry is very powerful. It’s always there to pull us away from the task at hand. A consistent meditation practice trains us to catch ourselves lost in thought and observe the present moment in a happier, healthier state of mind.
So next time you shower, take a mindful breath or two and push Chris, license plate number ABC 123, or that inconsiderate stranger that took cuts at the grocery store out of there. Seize the opportunity to simply relax, shower, and enjoy being alive. If you’re meditating in our mobile unit, you’re catching yourself sooner and more often. If you’re not, and want your company to try a ten-minute MeditationWorks mobile meditation session, please don’t hesitate to call Jake at 248-798-3366. We’ll be happy to roll by!
Until we meet again…
