What’s the CEO of your company like? Intense? Driven? Gripping a cell full of emails and text messages? It’s often how the job of running a successful company is earned, and unfortunately it comes with insomnia, distraction, impatience and a whole lotta stress. Four weeks ago, MeditationWorks was summoned by a CEO kind of like the one we described above. Already he’s a different man.
“I tried to meditate,” he told us. “I have an app. I have a book. And let me tell you, there’s NO way anyone can meditate in this place.” How does he know? From personal experience.
He read the book. He downloaded the meditation app and turned the lights off in his corner office far above the city streets. He shut the door, silenced his phone and turned the app on.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
Moments later he heard a persistent knock. When he didn’t answer, papers were shoved noisily beneath the door. As he struggled to regain focus, the cell in his hand beckoned.
“Open me,” it begged silently. “Check my emails. I’ve got some great Instagram pics for you to see. Come on,” it cooed. “There’s so much stuff to see in me. Open me.”
He heard his CFO’s voice faintly through the wall. Footsteps tapped hurriedly by. After three minutes, he finally gave up.
It wasn’t any easier at home. There were familiar smells and sounds, the dogs bugging him, pulling him away as the voice from the app spoke on. There was laundry to do. Game of Thrones on DVR. Again, he gave up.
When he heard of the MeditationWorks mobile meditation program with its distraction-free dedicated space, he was intrigued. Skeptical, but curious, he climbed aboard with nine of his staff for his first session. The mobile unit smelled and felt like peace, the guide was calm and helpful, and Justin’s voice was soothing.
It wasn’t easy. His body fidgeted. His mind raced. But the guide had told him that this was normal. So he sat with it.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
As he opened his eyes he was surprised. “Are you sure that was 10 minutes,” he asked? “It felt like a lot less.” He watched as his employees returned to work, chatting casually and smiling. Later that day, in a meeting with three pretty annoying reps, he felt calmer, and undeniably refreshed. So he attended another session. And another. And then five more.
He lingered on the sidewalk after his eighth session, amid construction equipment and workers busy on his building’s main floor build-out, his ever-present cell phone conspicuously absent.
“The sitting still. It’s so much better. And the street sounds don’t bother me at all. I actually look forward to them!”
“Are there changes in you? Anything you’re aware of that’s different?” asked Jake.
“Oh, there’s no doubt. I am definitely more mindful,” he said proudly. “Everything’s a little better, but I must say the drive home is the biggest difference. I think I actually find it relaxing now!”
