MeditationWorks is working hard! Not just delivering the world’s first barrier-busting mobile meditation program to hundreds of stressed-out workers in Michigan, but doing some serious meditation myth-busting as we roll.
Our program participants who admit they’ve meditated at home or at their desk give similar descriptions of their experience. “Well, I’ve tried,” they say with a sheepish smile, “but I’m just not good at it.” “My mind was racing.” “I got so distracted.” or “I couldn’t sit still that long; I just gave up.”
So here are three common meditation myths, and with them the realities that will show you that anyone, including you, can meditate.
MYTH: “I can’t meditate because my mind wanders and I can’t clear it”
REALITY: Humans have naturally wandering minds. The trick during meditation is to catch yourself in thought or distraction and return your attention back to the breath. This may happen a hundred times during our ten-minute sessions, but it’s OK! Simply acknowledge the thought or sensation, the sound or the memory, and say to yourself, “yep, I got it, but it’s back to the breath.”
MYTH: “I don’t have time to meditate”
REALITY: Everyone has ten minutes a day to spend in peace and stillness. This is a wonderful window of time to really get an effective session in. It’s long enough to produce solid therapeutic benefits, and short enough to be really attainable. And since MeditationWorks pulls right up to your company’s door, you can come on down and be back to your desk in just a few minutes. We are all taking breaks, to scroll the Internet, or text, or check scores, and some of us smoke or eat. Consider your MeditationWorks meditation session a break, just a better, healthier break!
MYTH: “Meditation is for weirdos”
REALITY: You don’t need to be a hemp-wearing hippy in a mountain shack to meditate. You don’t need to sit cross-legged or chant. You simply need to be a person who can sit and breathe. You come as you are, in the clothes you wore to work, and take a seat in our beautifully appointed mobile unit. (And if you want to go old school, we have a few comfy meditation cushions in every trailer.)
So there you go. Meditation seems easy, sitting and breathing, right? It’s the misconceptions regarding technique and the distracting nature of our work and home surroundings that make it “hard.” Not to worry. MeditationWorks is on the way to bust the barriers, and the myths! See how our program works by watching the video below!
Until we meet again…
