“Take a deep breath!”
“Let it go!”
“Don’t sweat the small stuff!”
How many times have we heard that advice? Or even given it to others? It all seems so easy doesn’t it? If you breathe, you relax. If you let go of worry, you’re happier. If you focus, you get stuff done. So why are we still so stressed out?
We all know how to live calmer, happier lives. But somehow when we’re in the moment all those wise words just fly out the window. Now we know exactly why.
A new study out of Michigan State University (Go Green!) found that it’s simply not enough to ask ourselves or others to simply be “mindful”. We need to actively and consistently meditate to develop a brain that naturally and spontaneously responds mindfully in a consistent way.
When we experience stress, our brains and bodies respond by tensing muscles, diverting blood circulation, driving up blood pressure and even our heart rate. Even when stress is low grade, the panicky, emotional, and impulsive actions overpower the higher-order thinking lobes of our brain.
So as we’re driving late to soccer practice, checking work emails, or trying to feed the kids in the car on the way. We just can’t access the reasoning we need to calm down, and focus on one thing at a time. Meditation helps us modulate the frustration, fear, and irritation that inevitably pops up, but no matter how many times we’ve heard that’s what we need to do, most never get around to doing it, let alone doing it consistently.
Brief, consistent weekly mediation builds the higher-order areas of the brain and quiets our panic centers. One meditation session will leave you feeling relaxed and focused, but a consistent practice will allow the brain to respond more thoughtfully to all the stressors and distractions that life throws our way.
