Since our launch one year ago, we’ve confirmed what we believed to be true, that consistency of meditation practice could be achieved by bringing a mobile unit to the door of companies and schools, thereby providing truly effective stress-reduction for all participants. Along the way we’ve made some powerful discoveries.
While all programs are well attended, the ones in which the CEOs and managers meditate along with staff are the strongest. Mindful leadership is extremely important and highly valued by some of the world’s most successful leaders. We touched base with one such leader, Kevin Schnieders of EDSI, to see how the MeditationWorks program has impacted his company.
- You implemented mindful leadership years ago. How does your training impact how you manage your company?
Self-awareness is a big part of our culture at EDSI. I believe we know ourselves really well, and that leaves space to appreciate our colleagues.
Also, all of our leaders serve the individuals who report to them. They may come to their service though different avenues – some as counselors, others as coaches, and still others as exceptional customer service representatives. Ultimately, they all land at the same place – living their professional lives in service to others.
Meditation fits perfectly with our thinking and how we care for our corporate culture.
- You were the very first CEO to provide your employees with a weekly mobile meditation program. 11 months later, what changes do you see in those participating?
I was pleasantly surprised that so many people decided to give it a chance. I could have never predicted that some people within the EDSI family would have embraced meditation. 11 months later, they are the greatest advocates. I know that people frequently share that they are more patient and wait longer before responding to questions or emails. It’s been fun to realize that even a very healthy company culture like ours can be improved through the meditation program.
- Do you feel your employees appreciate and look forward to their meditation program as a valuable benefit of working at EDSI?
For sure – I get to work with an amazing group of people. They are always quick to share gratitude. Nearly everyone has approached me to share how much they enjoy and appreciate the opportunity to have regular meditation at work.
Mindfulness is contagious. It starts with the actions of one trained individual, and spreads throughout a company or school. The benefits of mindful leadership cannot be underestimated!
