He was one of 28 curious faces, a handsome 30-40ish executive climbing into MeditationWorks mobile unit for his very first meditation session.
“He won’t be back,” a co-worker claimed as she watched him return to his office ten minutes later. “He’s a man’s man, played college football. He’s so type A, so stressed out. Plus he’s got four kids at home and they all play sports.” She smiled knowingly. “He’ll never take the time to meditate.”
We are now 11 weeks into our MeditationWorks mindfulness training program at his company and the executive, the guy who seemed too manly, too busy to take a ten minute meditation break has attended every week, enjoying 10 peaceful minutes with a dedicated group of about 20 co-workers. Yesterday we pulled him aside as he waited politely for everyone else to exit. We had a question for him.
“Your job is demanding. At home you’re chasing four kids around. Is this mindfulness training working for you?”
He responded without hesitation. “It absolutely is. Like just yesterday I was in the stands. Just watching the game. All around me are parents: yelling at the refs, complaining about the coaches, going nuts. I’m a pretty competitive guy and admit that used to be me. Now I kind of smile at them and actually enjoy watching my kid play. It’s got to be the meditation.”
“Anything else,” we asked?
“Yep,” he laughed. “I used to be a pretty aggressive driver. I’m just not anymore. I get to point B like your tip card said, in a better frame of mind. That NEVER would have happened before I started this program.”
We get this a lot, but it’s always wonderful to hear. A few minutes of meditation weekly in our mobile unit at work is the foundation for small changes in the executive’s behavior accumulating into immense changes in his life. Because it’s quick, it’s easy, and because it works.
He’s less reactive and more alert (and safer!) on the way home as drivers swear, sputter and swerve past. He arrives a calmer, more relaxed version of himself, able to sit back and enjoy his child’s lacrosse game as others freak out around him. Imagine the effects his mindful behavior is having on his clients, co-workers, family and even the strangers he encounters. He’s enjoying life a little more, and everyone in his life benefits.
His CEO has signed up with MeditationWorks again. “It’s working,” he says. “I see it. And more importantly, they see it.”
This is why we do what we do. We provide a better break for stressed-out workers, one that reduces stress and sharpens focus, one that makes them a little happier and healthier. Let us know if you want to try a test drive aboard the MeditationWorks Express!
Until we meet again…
